The Dragon of Boeotia

The Dragon of Boeotia" is a story about the Phoenician prince Cadmus, who founds the city of Thebes after killing a dragon that guarded a spring. Sent to search for his sister Europa, Cadmus was instructed by an oracle to follow a cow to the place where it lay down and found a city. Cadmus sent men for water, but they were killed by the dragon, so he slew the beast himself. He then sowed the dragon's teeth, from which sprang a race of warriors called the Spartoi, who eventually helped him build the city after they fought and killed each other until only five remained.
